When two Swedish sisters arrived in Zanzibar twenty years ago looking for the ideal location to build their dream lodge, they had the entire island to choose from. The area known as Matemwe was their obvious choice – secluded and peaceful with turquoise waters lapping against an idyllic beach. While other parts of Zanzibar have experienced a rapid increase in resorts, Matemwe is blessed in having remained secluded, off the beaten track and simply far from it all.
One of only a handful of boutique lodges in Zanzibar, Matemwe is perched on a coral rock outcrop overlooking a white sandy beach gently sloping into the Indian Ocean. Adjacent to the lodge, the corals surrounding the Mnemba Atoll offer superb diving and snorkeling. Fresh seafood, refreshing cocktails and relaxing massages are just some elements of the laid-back daily routines of Matemwe’s guests.
Matemwe is made up of only twelve beach chalets all overlooking the Indian Ocean. Each of the private verandas is furnished with large hammocks and sofas, perfect for whiling away the time as the occasional dhow drifts past in the distance.
While staying at Matemwe is conducive to watching the world drift by at a leisurely pace, there are a number of activities available to more active guests. Snorkel and dive in the marine park at Mnemba Atoll, go deep-sea fishing, undertake excursions to historic Stone Town or simply make the most of the secluded beach with a swim and a stroll.
