Ras Nungwi

Ras Nungwi

On the northernmost peninsula of Zanzibar Island, Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel overlooks a sparkling expanse of iridescent Indian Ocean, a cluster of whitewashed and palm thatched cottages in rich tropical gardens. Its myriad pathways are shaded by elegant palms, creating soft sun-dappled walkways between beach and banda, balcony and bar.

The hotel makes use of ancient local building traditions to create a contemporary architectural space from natural materials. All main structures are open-air; makuti-thatched ceilings arch high overhead, allowing all to luxuriate in the space, light and atmosphere that this location affords. The swimming pool is lined with glass mosaic tiles in shades of blue, and commands stunning views of the Indian Ocean.

Interiors are beautifully decorated in ethnic style, with inspired use of local fabrics such as khangas, kikois and kitenges. These cloths form an elegant theme of cushioned comfort through the many secluded lounging areas, inside and out.

Accommodation is in charming thatched chalets or lodge rooms, each with a private balcony and en-suite facilities. All rooms have beautiful hardwood furniture, opulent fabrics, and hand-crafted four poster beds shrouded beneath billowing mosquito nets.

BEACH

The unspoilt beach at Ras Nungwi is arguably the best on Zanzibar - uncrowded and superb for swimming, walking and all kind of watersports - the nearby coral reef yields a beautiful lagoon. Low tides reveal sparkling white coral sand bars, and rock pools teeming with marine life.

DIVING

Overwhelming numbers of tropical fish proliferate on the coral gardens that form a lagoon around Ras Nungwi. The majestic whale shark migrates past us twice a year and humpback whales sometimes breach right outside the hotel. Dolphins are permanent residents often accompanying us on boat trips, jumping and diving with their young. The secluded beach is also popular for turtles.

With warm tropical waters and visibility often over 30 mts Ras Nungwi is the perfect destination.

FISHING

The waters between Zanzibar and Pemba are home to some excellent year round game fishing opportunities.
