Selous Game Reserve covers a vast 45,000km² of southern Tanzania. It gained UNESCO World Heritage site status in recognition of the variety of wildlife and habitats found here. The landscape varies from grassy plains and riverine woodland, to lakes and waterways lined with doum palms and swirled with sandbanks. Selous is Africa’s largest stronghold of wild dogs. It is also home to good numbers of lion, leopard, buffalo, hippo and elephant, and more than 400 bird species.
Roho ya Selous opened in August 2017 and is an ideal base for exploring the beautiful Selous Game Reserve. Situated in the slightly busier heart of the reserve, the camp is tucked into a grove of shady trees. It is close to a waterway linking Lake Manze and Lake Nzerakera. Eight spacious safari tents are kept private from one another by ample vegetation. Each tent has views through the trees to hippos in the water. Guest tent interiors, measure 60 square meters and have a sliding wall hanging that separates the changing area from the bathroom. Here you’ll find double basins, flush loo and an indoor and outdoor shower.
Roho ya Selous uses the latest tent technology with stretch-canvas tents and a large shade-netting surround. To combat the heat and humidity during the hottest months, tents come with “Evening Breeze” cooling above the beds. This helps ensure a comfortable night’s sleep, even during the hottest time of year.
There are plenty of areas in which to relax with a cool drink and a good book during the day. The main mess offers a blend of indoor and outdoor dining and of course, there is always a blazing fire for the cooler evenings
