The choice of places to stay on Zanzibar is bewildering and only keeps growing. 30 years ago, there were effectively no hotels outside of Stone Town and only very few basic guest houses on the East Coast. Now, almost every stretch of beach has anything from a luxury hotel, a boutique hotel, resort or small guest house just off the beach. A quick look at one of the online booking systems will leave you truly confused. We have limited our selection to just a handful of places that we know offer great quality and nice beaches. Not every part of Zanzibar is the same, but there is a common theme: at low tide, the waters recede and are shallow a long way from the shore. The exception to this rule is to be found on the few smaller islands with lodging and in the North of Unguja Island (Zanzibar is made up of Unguja to the South and Pemba to the North). The deep(er) water experience there, draws large numbers of visitors to these northern at Nungwi and Kendwa, home to some of the biggest resorts as well. It can feel just a little too busy and noisy at night!
Alternatively, accept that the water is shallow at low tide and head for more relaxed long white-sand palm lined beaches in the East of the island. Back up the shallow water with a nice pool and you can’t go far wrong. Zanzibar White Luxury Villa & Spa has a range of high end room options to choose from with the best in our opinion being the ocean front villas. Most affordable are the Cinnamon Rooms, but they may not quite live up to your expectations after seeing the pictures – Tom S.
