Lengai Camp – getting there and seasons
For much of the year, Lengai Camp is booked on a private basis by its owners. Outside these periods, it can be booked privately by groups or on shared basis. It is a small camp with just 6 guest tents.
This area, like much of Tanzania, varies enormously between the dry and green seasons. In the dry season (July through November) it can get dusty and the grass turns yellow, burnt by the sun. Ironically, this is also the coolest time of year, although it never gets anywhere close to cold. It the rainy period, it transforms to a brilliant green, attracting large herds of wildebeest and zebra that stay around camp until the grass and water is gone. Then they move to Tarangire or nearby to Lake Natron. There is always a decent amount of wildlife here including lesser known species such as Gerenuk, Lesser Kudu and Oryx.
Reached by private charter or by dirt roads, camp is half day’s journey from Arusha, Tarangire and Manyara and a full day from Serengeti. Those arriving from Northern Serengeti, pass through Loliondo Game Controlled Area. This lies between Lake Natron Game Controlled Area and Serengeti National Park. In the wet season, a southerly route takes visitors along the top pf the Rift Valley Escarpment to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This route is one that few tour operators take but one with stunning scenery.
