Expeditionary Walking Camp Ruaha: A Unique Safari Experience in Tanzania
Discover the Untamed Beauty of Ruaha National Park
Hidden in the heart of Tanzania, Ruaha National Park offers one of Africa’s most exclusive and remote safari experiences. Far from the crowded northern circuits of Serengeti, Tarangire, and Ngorongoro, Ruaha is a land of baobab-studded landscapes, dry sand rivers, and abundant wildlife. One of the most immersive ways to explore this wilderness is through the Expeditionary Walking Camp Ruaha, a seasonal, mobile camp that allows travelers to experience the park on foot, guided by expert safari guides. Why Choose an Expeditionary Walking Safari in Ruaha?
Unlike traditional safaris that rely on game drives, walking safaris in Ruaha offer a deeper connection with the environment. Walking through the wilderness at a leisurely pace, you become part of the landscape, observing elephants, lions, and rare antelope species from a completely different perspective. The dry riverbeds, golden grasslands, and rocky outcrops make for an ever-changing backdrop as you follow the tracks of wildlife with an experienced guide. Price shown is for 3+ guests. For 2 guests, the daily rate is US$ 1540 per person -
Ugalla River National Park
The park comprises 3865 square kilometres of the greater wildlife spectacle and this is your chance to walk amongst it all. In 2019, Ugalla River National Park was converted from the previous Game Reserve status. There are no other lodges or camps in this area, and the amazing river landscape is in the pre-development phase for traditional tourism, remaining in the meantime, a remarkable wilderness, home to many species not seen in the North of Tanzania. Nomad has always had a particular attraction to this kind of wild, this is where it all began and now operates during a few months of each year one of it's Expeditionary Walking Camps. These camps also operate in Ruaha and Serengeti National Park's remote areas. The simple walking camp, is a conscious step back to Nomad's roots as safari pioneers, because while the world may have changed, the things that make a safari exceptional haven’t. The Expeditionary Walking Camp is the ultimate way for a group of friends or family to get off-grid in little known areas of Tanzania. The experience is adventurous by its very nature, but much of the pleasure is the gentle rhythm that establishes itself on your safari. Price shown is for 3+ guests. For 2 guests, the daily rate is US$ 1540 per person Ugalla River National Parks Flier -

This self-contained private house for up to ten persons, totally designed around families, is charm itself, and set plum in the middle of one of Serengeti’s richest mammal habitats. Price shown is per adult based on 4 adults. Extra charge applies for each extra guest, with a limit of 10. Ask for a quotation based on group size. Solitary under huge skies and amidst the great grassland plains, it grants complete freedom from other people and schedules. It’s also excitement-central: a lively base for expertly guided forays into the bush: scouting buffalo, elephants, lion, crocodiles – and the famous wildebeest river crossings. Nomad founder, Mkombe Mniko, was a guide who cherished this area and connected strongly with children – and their parents. He would have seriously loved it here. And so will anyone who stays in this house they named after him. -
Sand Rivers Selous is perched right on the banks of the Rufiji River. All the main areas and rooms have superb river views. It was the first safari lodge to open in the Selous Game Reserve and as such, had the pick of locations. It’s really rather special in an area that is far away from the main hub of the park where you will hardly see another soul. Sand Rivers Selous has just 8 stone and thatched cottages, all are open-fronted and raised on decks overlooking the river. There are 5 Riverside rooms - with en-suite bathrooms, hot and cold running water, flush toilets and powerful showers - and 3 Hillside Suites. The Suites have all the above, but a large living space and a small plunge pool. -
A grove of Kigelia (Sausage Tree) is home to this simple but comfortable tented camp. Ruaha National Park has to be one of the most scenic in Tanzania. It has acres upon acres of baobab studded plains, sweeping sand rivers, swathes of woodland and seemingly impossible balancing granite boulders, all surrounded by seriously impressive game populations. Kigelia Ruaha sits right in the middle of it all, flanked by ancient baobab forests and overlooking the dry river bed of the Ifuguru River. Ruaha surprisingly is relatively undiscovered and receives far fewer visitors than its more famous counterparts in the north of the country. So, on safari out here you have it almost all to yourself. -
Kiba Point is a exclusive-use lodge for up to 10 persons situated just down river from Sand Rivers Selous. One of the greatest privileges here is to be properly left alone in nature. Kiba Point is a private hideaway for families and friends, with just four suites reclining by the Rufiji River. With a private guide and camp staff, the freedom to explore the Selous is all there for the taking, on your timetable and your terms. Price shown is per adult based on a group of 4 persons. Extra charge applies for each extra guest, with a limit of 10. Ask for a quotation based on group size. Perched on the banks of the Rufiji River, all main areas and rooms have superb river views. Richard Bonham had the pick of locations when he chose this place – we think you’ll agree it’s really rather special. -
Chat with a Chimp at Greystoke Mahale
Greystoke Mahale has won the Best Location in Africa award at the Safari Awards for 2017. Greystoke sits deep within the Mahale Mountains National Park, on the edge of the second deepest lake in the world - Lake Tanganyika. Nestled between the gin-clear water of the lake, and the tumbling forests sits our extraordinary castaway lodge. There are absolutely no roads here, and virtually no other people. That is what being in Mahale is all about. This really is the edge of the world and the ultimate in remote wilderness. The main reason for making the journey down to Mahale is to see the chimpanzees. Mahale is home to one of the largest populations of wild chimps with access to a habituated community known as the M Group. A team of Japanese researchers have worked in these mountains studying the chimps for over 50 years, and the guides and their families have played a part in their work for decades. All of our camp guides have had a member of their family involved with the chimps since they were young, and they gladly followed in their footsteps. There is nothing the guides don’t know about the characters, politics and intricacies of this fascinating community and they bring it to life with an extraordinary passion. There is no one else you should meet these chimps with. -
Chada Katavi belongs to the beasts
Chada Katavi belongs to the beasts of Africa, it always has, as if they were all created here in this remote place. This is the promise of Katavi - total absorption in the natural world and virtually no one else around. Katavi really is one of the final frontiers. This is a true wilderness which is all about enjoying being out on safari without the crowds, in fact often without any company at all. Chada Katavi is only open for six months of the year (June - November) and we think everyone should be clambering over themselves to get here - it really is worth it. -

Kuro Tarangire is nestled right in the middle of Tarangire National Park, just 15 minutes drive from the Kuro airstrip. The camp's central location means you get away from the crowds that often linger closer to the park gate. It is important to have your own corner of this special park all to yourselves, while still within striking distance of the Silale swamp. Silale can be a real hub of wildlife activity and is well worth a visit. Kuro camp is small and intimate, with a cosy mess area that draws inspiration from the Maasai. With only six tents, one of which is a family unit - it is a classic bush camp of old. Just the way it should be. -

Serengeti Safari Camp is designed to follow the migrating herds, which is the primary objective of most safari-goers. Camp sites are carefully selected to be within striking distance of the herds (nature allowing of course) but always tucked away in corners of hidden wilderness as far from others as possible. There are two identical camps which leap frog around the Serengeti, moving 4 - 5 times a year. This is one of the last camps to continue doing this as many "mobiles camps" now only move twice per season. Each year, these little camps cast off from Lamai Serengeti and begin their own odyssey. Covering hundreds of miles and moving every couple of months along a route that the herds have travelled for hundreds of years, Serengeti Safari Camp is where you come for your migration fix. -

Entamanu Ngorongoro sits on the remote Northwestern corner of the Ngorongoro Crater rim. The camp is accessed via its own road from where there are spectacular views down over the Southern Serengeti before popping up over the Rim to the immensity of the Crater below. This is one of the only sites at the Crater where it is still an experience of the Crater as it used to be. Far from the crowds, tucked away and remote. This site is in the only place where you can watch the sun rise over the Crater, and set over the Serengeti. Entamanu Ngorongoro offers a unique experience as it is situated on the scenic Northwestern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. The camp is designed to provide guests with stunning views of both the Crater and the Southern Serengeti. It blends comfort with adventure, providing an authentic safari experience connecting you to the natural landscape. It can be cold here, it can be windy and it can be foggy, but come prepared and the reward is great. This is how it feels to really live on the edge of the world, right up close and personal with the wild of these volcanic highlands. A lot of thought has gone into keeping everyone comfortable at Entamanu Ngorongoro, where the elements are king. Gas heaters in the rooms, fires in the main mess and lots of cosy corners wrapped in sheepskin. The wind can be intense depending on the seasons so the camp is designed to limit any noise in the rooms at night. It is important to be aware that this experience is about feeling like you are on the edge, not about 5 star frills and fancies. -
Lamai Serengeti provides an exclusive experience amidst the stunning Serengeti landscapes. With only a few rooms, guests relish unparalleled privacy while observing the wildlife roaming across the plains. Each tented room merges comfort with a seamless connection to the natural environment. Tucked amongst the rocks of Kogakuria Kopje it enjoys panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Only a few miles away is where the wildebeest herds seasonally cross the Mara River. Between late July and October, this is where you will find the migration. For the rest of the year, it is wild Serengeti, with all the resident game of the Masai Mara but without the people. Experience the Serengeti from this extraordinary vantage point. Big game, big views, big Africa. Each room makes the very best of incredible views, space and light, while being sensitively designed and placed so as to be perfectly camouflaged against the natural backdrop. See, but not be seen. The panoramic views from every corner of Lamai Serengeti of the Serengeti and Masai Mara beyond deliver impact from the moment you arrive.
