What does going on safari with Nomad Tanzania mean? Simple – authentic safari camps, excellent experienced guides and camps in superb locations.
This operator one of our key partners in Tanzania and our relationship predates both Nomad Tanzania and Safaris and Expeditions, all the way back to 1991. That was when I worked with Ker & Downey Tanzania, setting up 4 camps in Tarangire and Serengeti national parks and on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater.
Mark H. who later went on to found Nomad Tanzania, joined us as a camp manager and ended up holding the fort at Ngorongoro Crater together with Mkombe, another employee he made friends with while on the job. It is interesting to note that Nomad Tanzania’s Kuro Camp is situated very close to the original Ker & Downey Tarangire camp, that Entamanu Ngorongoro is not far from the Ngorongoro Crater rim camp we established, and that Lamai Serengeti occupies the exact same spot as the Northern Serengeti Camp we built on the Wogakuria kopjes. Nomad went on to build Mkombe’s House near Lamai Serengeti, in memory of Mkombe.
Mark was later joined by several others who were instrumental in operating Ker & Downey’s flying safari program, proving that the concept was right, but the timing was perhaps a bit ahead of it’s day.
Nomad Tanzania’s two Serengeti Safari camps closely resemble the backbone of Ker & Downeys mobile safari camps that we used at that time to outfit a range of profesional guides and their clients.
I am very pleased that Nomad Tanzania recently started offering truly remote walking safaris from lightweight adventure camps in Serengeti, Ruaha and Ugalla National parks, again breaking ground and staying loyal to the early safari spirit. We are big fans!
