  • Expeditionary Walking Camp Ruaha: A Unique Safari Experience in Tanzania

Discover the Untamed Beauty of Ruaha National Park

Hidden in the heart of Tanzania, Ruaha National Park offers one of Africa’s most exclusive and remote safari experiences. Far from the crowded northern circuits of Serengeti, Tarangire, and Ngorongoro, Ruaha is a land of baobab-studded landscapes, dry sand rivers, and abundant wildlife. One of the most immersive ways to explore this wilderness is through the Expeditionary Walking Camp Ruaha, a seasonal, mobile camp that allows travelers to experience the park on foot, guided by expert safari guides.

Why Choose an Expeditionary Walking Safari in Ruaha?

Unlike traditional safaris that rely on game drives, walking safaris in Ruaha offer a deeper connection with the environment. Walking through the wilderness at a leisurely pace, you become part of the landscape, observing elephants, lions, and rare antelope species from a completely different perspective. • Ugalla River National Park

The park comprises 3865 square kilometres of the greater wildlife spectacle and this is your chance to walk amongst it all. In 2019, Ugalla River National Park was converted from the previous Game Reserve status. There are no other lodges or camps in this area, and the amazing river landscape is in the pre-development phase for traditional tourism, remaining in the meantime, a remarkable wilderness, home to many species not seen in the North of Tanzania. Nomad has always had a particular attraction to this kind of wild, this is where it all began and now operates during a few months of each year one of it's Expeditionary Walking Camps. These camps also operate in Ruaha and Serengeti National Park's remote areas. The simple walking camp, is a conscious step back to Nomad's roots as safari pioneers, because while the world may have changed, the things that make a safari exceptional haven’t. The Expeditionary Walking Camp is the ultimate way for a group of friends or family to get off-grid in little known areas of Tanzania. The experience is adventurous by its very nature, but much of the pleasure is the gentle rhythm that establishes itself on your safari. Price shown is for 3+ guests. • First off, a disclaimer: flycamping has nothing to do with flying. Rather, it takes its name from sleeping in the bush under nothing more than a flysheet, as was the camping tradition before the luxury‐laden era of ‘glamping’ arrived. The premise is that you spend the days walking, and the nights sleeping out in light weight tents, in a makeshift camp that moves each day – the end of each day’s walk brings you to your new site for the night.

  • What does it take to find the perfect tree house? Located on the western side of the Mara River and only open to access by foot – thick with trees, valleys, rocks – we kept circling back to one particular spot: fifty metres from the water looking along a stretch that is filled by a raucous pod of hippo. A line of Warburgia stretches along a little draw, and a single tree at the end shows scars: a scratching post for a resident male leopard. The salt lick luring the impala leads to a hippo funnel and their small sandy beach.
