Overview

A flying safari across Kenya and Tanzania, staying in a private conservancy, a remote corner of the Serengeti and Ruaha, Tanzania's great southern wilderness.

This safari links three areas chosen for their wildlife and for being away from the crowds. After a night in Nairobi you fly to the Mara Naboisho Conservancy, where limits on vehicle numbers and the freedom to walk, drive at night and sleep out in a fly camp make for a more personal side of the Masai Mara ecosystem.

From Kenya you cross into Tanzania and the eastern Serengeti. Namiri Plains sits in an area long closed to protect its cheetah, and it remains one of the best places in Africa to watch big cats.

The final stay is at Jabali Ridge in Ruaha, a park of baobabs, sand rivers and big lion prides, with a real chance of wild dog. A last flight takes you to Dar es Salaam for your journey home.

Day by day

Day 1Hemingways Nairobi
You are met at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and driven to Hemingways Nairobi, a small boutique hotel in the leafy suburb of Karen. If you arrive in time, visit the Karen Blixen Museum, the former home of the author of Out of Africa, or feed the Rothschild giraffes at the nearby Giraffe Centre. Otherwise, rest after your flight before the safari begins.Overnight: Hemingways Nairobi
Days 2–4Naboisho Camp, Mara Naboisho Conservancy
Transfer to Wilson Airport for a light-aircraft flight to the Mara Naboisho Conservancy, a private conservancy bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve. Naboisho Camp has nine spacious tents, each with a veranda and en-suite bathroom.Because the conservancy limits the number of vehicles and allows activities not permitted in the reserve, you can explore in several ways: game drives by day and after dark, guided walks with Maasai guides, and a night in a fly camp under the stars. Look for lion, cheetah, elephant and giraffe among the plains game, and spend time with the local Maasai communities.Overnight: Naboisho Camp (3 nights, all meals)
Days 5–6Namiri Plains, Eastern Serengeti
Fly south across the border to Tanzania and the eastern Serengeti. Namiri Plains stands in a remote area that was closed to visitors for many years to protect its big cats, and it is now one of the best places in Africa to see cheetah, as well as lion, leopard and serval.Head out at dawn on game drives across the open plains, or explore on foot with your guide. Between drives, relax by the pool or book a massage, and watch animals coming to drink at the nearby spring. An early-morning balloon flight over the Serengeti can be added.Overnight: Namiri Plains (2 nights, all meals)
Days 7–9Jabali Ridge, Ruaha National Park
Fly south to Ruaha, Tanzania's great wilderness park of baobab forest, dry sand rivers and palm-lined riverbanks. It holds around a tenth of Africa's lions, along with leopard, buffalo, large elephant herds, endangered wild dog and more than 500 bird species.Jabali Ridge is built among granite boulders and old baobabs, with eight airy suites, each with a king-size bed, rain shower and private deck looking over the forest. Spend your days on game drives and walks, and the hot hours at the infinity pool, spa or library. In the dry season, watch elephants digging for water in the riverbeds; in the rains, the Mwagusi River starts to flow again. Dinners are served by lantern light under the stars.Overnight: Jabali Ridge (3 nights, all meals)
Day 10Fly to Dar es Salaam
After breakfast, you are taken to the airstrip for your flight to Julius Nyerere International Airport, Dar es Salaam, to connect with your onward flight.
