Overview

A flying safari across one great ecosystem and two countries: Tarangire's elephants, the Serengeti migration and the Masai Mara, staying at three camps chosen for their wildlife.

This safari packs three of East Africa's finest wildlife areas into ten days, with short flights between them so no time is lost on the road. It begins in Tarangire, a park of giant baobabs, big elephant herds and buffalo that many visitors overlook, where you can walk, drive by day and by night, and take an optional balloon flight.

From there you fly to the Serengeti. Olakira Migration Camp moves with the seasons: on the southern plains near Ndutu during the calving season, and in the far north near Kogatende for the river crossings. Wherever the herds are, you stay close to them.

Finally you cross into Kenya. The Serengeti and the Masai Mara are one ecosystem divided by a border, and three nights at Rekero Camp on the Talek River give you some of the best year-round game viewing in Africa before you fly to Nairobi.

Day by day

Day 1Katambuga House, Arusha
A driver meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport for an hours drive to Katambuga House near Arusha. Spend the rest of the day by the pool, unwinding after your international flight.Overnight: Katambuga House
Days 2–3Oliver's Camp, Tarangire National Park
After a relaxed breakfast you return to the airport for a short flight to Kuro airstrip in Tarangire. Your guide from Oliver's Camp is waiting, and the game drive to camp in the south of the park brings you in time for lunch on the deck, looking out towards the Tarangire River. In the dry season Tarangire holds some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Tanzania, with large herds of elephant and buffalo gathering along the river, and more than 500 bird species through the year. Explore on game drives and walking safaris with your guide, head out after dark on a night drive to find the park's nocturnal animals, and, if you like, add an early-morning balloon flight over the plains.Overnight: Oliver's Camp (2 nights)
Days 4–6Olakira Migration Camp, Serengeti National Park
Fly from Kuro to the Serengeti, landing at Ndutu in the south or Kogatende in the north depending on where the migration is. Olakira's guides meet you and drive you to camp for lunch. From December to March the camp is on the southern plains, where the wildebeest give birth and predators follow the herds. From June to October it moves north, close to the Mara River crossings. Game drives go out morning and afternoon, often with a picnic breakfast for an early start and sundowners on the way home. In the evening, enjoy drinks around the fire, dinner in the mess tent and a night under the stars from your tent.Overnight: Olakira Migration Camp (3 nights)
Days 7–9Rekero Camp, Masai Mara
After a last drive across the Serengeti, fly across the border to Ol Kiombo airstrip in Kenya's Masai Mara. Your Rekero guide gives you a short briefing and takes you on a game drive to camp, set above the Talek River, in time for lunch on the deck. The Mara is famous for its lion prides, cheetah families and elephant herds, and Rekero's position in the heart of the reserve puts you in the middle of it. Set out early for the cool morning hours and a picnic breakfast on the plains, rest in the heat of the day, and head out again in the afternoon, ending with sundowners as the light fades. At night you may hear hippos calling in the river below your tent.Overnight: Rekero Camp (3 nights)
Day 10Fly to Nairobi
After breakfast, fly from Ol Kiombo to Wilson Airport in Nairobi, where you are met and driven to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your onward flight.
