Overview

A private-guided safari through three of northern Tanzania's most distinct landscapes, travelling by road through the north and flying to the far northern Serengeti.

This nine-night safari links three very different corners of northern Tanzania, each chosen for its wildlife and for the freedom to explore beyond the usual routes. After a night in Arusha you head for Little Chem Chem, in a private concession on the wildlife corridor between Tarangire and Lake Manyara. Here you can walk, drive off-road and stay out after dark, tracking big-tusked elephants through the baobabs and palm groves.

From the plains you climb into the cool Crater Highlands, stopping for a farmhouse lunch at Gibb's Farm, to Entamanu Ngorongoro on the wild north-western rim of the crater. A morning on the crater floor is balanced by a walk along the rim with Maasai guides, with views into the caldera that few visitors see.

The safari ends with three nights at Lamai Serengeti, built into the granite kopjes of the far northern Serengeti above the Mara River valley. Your guide knows every kopje and pride territory in this remote corner near the Kenyan border, and the days are planned around what you most want to see.

Day 1Legendary Lodge, Arusha
You are met on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport and driven to Legendary Lodge, set in the gardens of a working coffee estate on the edge of Arusha. The drive takes about an hour. Relax on the veranda or walk in the grounds after your flight, before your safari begins in the morning.Overnight: Legendary Lodge (breakfast and dinner)
Day 2Little Chem Chem, Burunge Wildlife Management Area
Drive south-west to the Burunge Wildlife Management Area, a private concession bordering Lake Manyara on the wildlife corridor between Tarangire and Manyara. Little Chem Chem is a small tented camp looking across to Lake Burunge and the Babati hills, in country known for big-tusked elephants and ancient baobabs.After settling in, go out on an afternoon game drive or a guided walk across the concession, where open plains run down to the lake shore.Overnight: Little Chem Chem (all meals)
Days 3–4Little Chem Chem, Burunge Wildlife Management Area
Two full days to explore at your own pace. On a private concession your guide can drive off-road, lead you on foot through the acacia and palm groves, and stay out after sunset for a night drive. Watch elephant herds moving to the water, look for lion and cheetah on the grasslands, or walk out early with your guide and an armed ranger to read the tracks of the night before.A game drive into Tarangire National Park can also be arranged. In the heat of the day, rest by the pool or watch game from the mess tent, and end the afternoon with sundowners as thousands of waterbirds settle on the lake.Overnight: Little Chem Chem (all meals)
Day 5Entamanu Ngorongoro, Ngorongoro Crater
Drive up into the green Crater Highlands, stopping for a relaxed farmhouse lunch at Gibb's Farm, among coffee fields and vegetable gardens near Karatu. Then climb to the crater rim and Entamanu Ngorongoro, on the wilder north-western edge, the only camp with views into both the crater and towards the Serengeti. End the day with private sundowners on the ridge with Maasai dancers as the light changes over the caldera.Overnight: Entamanu Ngorongoro (all meals)
Day 6Entamanu Ngorongoro, Ngorongoro Crater
Make an early start down the crater wall for a morning on the crater floor with your guide. Its grasslands, swamps and fever-tree forest hold remarkable numbers of wildlife, including black rhino, lion and old bull elephants.In the afternoon, walk along the rim from Seneto back to Entamanu with a Maasai guide, with the whole crater on one side and the Gol Mountains ahead, and visit a Maasai boma near camp. Walks depend on the season and the length of the grass.Overnight: Entamanu Ngorongoro (all meals)
Day 7Lamai Serengeti, Northern Serengeti
Drive down from the highlands to Lake Manyara airstrip for a scheduled flight north to Kogatende. Your guide meets you for the short drive to Lamai Serengeti, built among the granite boulders of the Kogakuria kopje with wide views over the Mara River valley. In the late afternoon, set out on your first game drive in an area known for its resident predators.Overnight: Lamai Serengeti (all meals)
Days 8–9Lamai Serengeti, Northern Serengeti
Head out at first light, when predators are most active, and stop for a cooked breakfast in the bush. Return to camp for the heat of the day, then explore the river lines, kopjes and open plains again in the afternoon.Your guide plans each day around your interests, whether that is following a leopard along the drainage lines, watching the Mara River, or exploring the remote country towards the Kenyan border. On the last evening, find a quiet kopje for a final sundowner.Overnight: Lamai Serengeti (all meals)
Day 10Fly to Arusha
After breakfast, take a last game drive to Kogatende airstrip for your flight back to Arusha, with views over the Rift Valley on the way. You are then driven to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight.

Good to know

  • Walks on the crater rim depend on the season: they are not possible when the grass is too long
  • Entamanu is at high altitude: expect strong sun by day and cold nights, so bring warm layers
  • Light-aircraft flights allow 15 kg of luggage per person, in soft bags
  • The return flight lands at Arusha Airport; allow time for the transfer to Kilimanjaro for international departures
